I’m delighted to be presenting two works as part of Fremantle Biennale this year.
My solo album Moths & Stars will be played as part of the curated Sound Sauna and I will present a new solo set as part of Manjaree Music on Nov 28th at Bathers Beach.

Manjaree Music:
As the sun sets, musicians and guest artists will soundtrack the golden hour with free live music and concerts at our Manjaree (Bathers Beach) Precinct. My set will be on Fri 28 Nov.

Sound Sauna:
Sound Sauna is a one-of-a-kind sensory ritual — a resonance spa at Manjaree (Bathers Beach), perched on the edge of the Indian Ocean. Set within a repurposed shipping container and lined with locally sourced timber, this installation fuses the restorative heat of traditional sauna culture with a transformative sonic experience. This intimate space invites you to sweat, float and dissolve into a curated sonic journey.

Across a series of 60-minute sessions, sound artists, musicians, poets, and cultural leaders create immersive soundscapes designed to deepen connection to place. Inspired by the Fremantle Biennale’s 2025 theme of sanctuary, each session is an exploration in active listening, collective care and embodied transformation. Sound changes with the time of day: morning meditations and vocal landscapes drift toward late-night DJ sets and experimental bass vibrations. Your body becomes a conduit for deep frequency — buoyant, dissolving, alive.

Whether you’re drawn by tradition, curiosity or the lure of sound and heat, Sound Sauna offers a space to reflect, to soften and to feel, floating between breath and rhythm. Come alone or with others. Sit, listen, sweat. Let the ocean hum at your back. The warmth will carry you and the sound will stay with you.

To book your experience, SEE THE FULL PROGRAM HERE.

Central to Slip is Foley art, a sound-effect technique used in film, where sounds on screen are recreated in post-production using unlikely objects and body movements in a practice of substitution.

Slip connects the illusion of Foley to the complexity of our present moment. Layers of data mediate our daily experiences, and invisible processes stretch the spaces between what we consume, and what goes on behind the scenes. Pairings are pulled apart and abstracted, entanglements are simplified, severed, and rewired to the point of absurdity.

Slip urges us to refocus our attention, as we unwittingly fall out of sync.

FRIM6: SPLIT SERIES VOL. 2

Aviva Endean from Australia, Henrik Olsson from Sweden. Two different composers and performers in the global society of improvised music. What connects them is that they shared an evening at the bookstore Rönnells Antikvariat in Stockholm during the Sound of Stockholm festival in 2022. Now they also share this cd, the second volume in FRIM Records ongoing Split Series. They represent two distinguished voices, but there are similarities in that they both, in an improvised manner, take point of departure in music they have composed and performed before. In the case of Aviva Endean, it’s a kind of live reworking of some similar ideas that she used on the album Moths & Stars (Room40, 2022). In the case of Henrik Olsson it’s about memory and how the human factor affects it, when he revreates an improvised composition, Common Ground, he performed two years earlier.

From her debut solo recording for Norwegian label Sofa in 2018, in which she solely improvised on acoustic instruments, Aviva Endean developed new skills when it came to record Moths & Stars. In her own words it was a way of braiding disparate strands of sounds together, to play with the listener’s sense of time and space… more

Composed by Paul Grabowsky and led by master musicians known as Daniel and David Wilfred, WATA is, and forms from manikay – invocations of time and place intended for public ceremonial events. These tell of the beginnings and ends of things, of the naming of people and places through songs that in their very performance dissolve linear time into a vast well, to become a model of a fully interconnected universe.

The seven parts of WATA carry concepts conveyed by the powerful ritual words sung by Daniel and overseen by David, with improvisation serving as a thread that links the orchestral sections together as part of a living, breathing, organic musical world.

From this idea grew a vision that has been realised over three decades through the generosity and collaboration of volunteers, donors, audiences and artists. The natural bush site was conceived by architect Hans Hallen, and transformed in 2014 with the expertise and vision of architects Phillip Cox and Clinton Murray.

Since the very first concert on the natural amphitheatre in April 1991, Four Winds has captured the hearts and minds of composers, musicians and audiences near and far. In its first year the festival attracted 200 enthusiastic music lovers to experience music in nature. The festival and year-round program now attracts thousands of people to Barragga Bay on the pristine Sapphire Coast of NSW each year

Hand to Earth is a call to open ears: eluding genre, traversing continents and fusing the ancient and contemporary. At its heart are yolŋu manikay (song cycles), a 40,000+ year-old oral tradition from south east Arnhem land, northern Australia. These songs exist to cross vast time and space, to continuously make the continuous – known as raki, the spirit that pulls all together, all performers all listeners.

Hand to Earth was developed during an Australia Art Orchestra residency in the remote highlands of Tasmania. Through the residency, Yolŋu songman, Daniel Yipininy Wilfred, and Korean vocalist, Sunny Kim, formed an effortless rapport that spans continents and cultures and expresses a deeply human commonality. In Hand to Earth their vocal approaches are melded into the atmospheres created by trumpeter/composer Peter Knight, David Yipininy Wilfred on yidaki and Aviva Endean on clarinets, woven into minimalist soundscapes reminiscent of Brian Eno and Jon Hassell.

“Daniel Wilfred shares one of the oldest song traditions in the world with us, it’s an extraordinary gift. He has one of those unforgettable voices that feels like it emanates from the earth and changes your body. He has taught us all to listen in new ways.”

PETER KNIGHT

“In our performances, you’re going to experience friendship. And you’ll hear us share ancient ideas and stories, but told in a way that’s quite contemporary.”

SUNNY KIM
