“One drop plus another drop makes one larger drop, not two.” This is how the “nutcase” Domenico in Andrei Tarkowsky´s film Nostalghia explains the inscription 1+1=1 on the wall of his house, pouring two drops of oil into his hand.
The long-form duo 1+1=1 is Pierluigi Billones excavation of the bass clarinet: cultural and musical histories and engagements are uncovered, a range of styles from classical to free jazz and Greek funeral music. Similarly, space and performance and presentation context are throughly examined through a non-standard approach to the physical staging of the work. The end result is perhaps the single most important contribution to the bass clarinet repertoire, and perhaps all chamber music of the mid-00s period.
