With an emphasis on improvisation, The Australian Art Orchestra explores the meeting points between disciplines and cultures, and imagines new musical forms to reflect the energy and diversity of 21st century Australia. Following the AAO’s annual Creative Music Intensive and the Meeting Points concert Hand to Earth on Sunday 23 September at Arts Centre Melbourne, the Interlingua symposium explores new approaches to musical improvisation informed and exemplified by the AAO’s work over many years with artists from Asia and Arnhem Land. Co-presented by the Melbourne Conservatory of Music and hosted by Arts Centre Melbourne, Interlingua brings together artists and lecturers from different cultures and disciplines. The symposium includes papers and performances by:
Sunny Kim (Seoul/Melbourne) – singer, composer, sound artist, Lecturer at Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, David and Daniel Wilfred (Ngukurr, Arnhem Land) – traditional songmen and longtime AAO associates, Myungjin Ko (Seoul) – Yanggeum (hammered dulcimer) and vocals. Co-leader of Korean Music Ensemble HONA, Maria Donohue (Glasgow) – Pianist, electronic music artist, PhD candidate (Huddersfield University), Aviva Endean (Melbourne) – Clarinetist and AAO Artistic Associate, Michael Hohnen (Darwin) – Bassist, Director of SkinnyFish Records, Dr Sam Curkpatrick (Melbourne) – musician, musicologist. Leading researcher in Arnhem Land manikay (song) and long-time associate of AAO and Daniel and David Wilfred, Dr Peter Knight (Melbourne) – Artistic Director Australian Art Orchestra, leading composer, trumpeter, sound artist, Dr Robert Vincs (Melbourne) – Head of Jazz and Improvisation, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, saxophonist, Christopher Hale (Melbourne) – Leading bassist, composer, educator, PhD candidate.
